I’m sure Herman Van Rumpoy and company are extremely unhappy with the news that Iran has struck deals with a private consortium of refiners in Europe to sell them oil in defiance of the E.U. sanctions against Iran. You see it’s like this, the governments and the banks are unable to do business with Iran anymore but individuals can still act if they so choose or go through a third party to strike private deals. State oil companies and state banks can’t trade with Iran.
Regardless of what you may or may not think about Iran the fact remains that they have the right to sell oil on the open market to anyone willing to buy it. If the E.U. doesn’t want to buy it then someone else will. It’s the law of the land. If anyone wants to be stupid enough to cut off a ready and available supply of the one commodity that, sold cheaply and freely on the open market, will help the E.U. periphery get back on their economic feet it is oil.
But, somehow, as always the ideology of our leaders trumps any rationality and like it or not European readers, your leaders want a subservient set of client states united in a dour and Orwellian union of states stripped of its identity and its dignity.
And they will literally do anything imaginable to get it.
If I were in Iran’s shoes, I’d want a nuclear weapon to defend myself from these lunatics myself.
Oh, Brent Crude went back over $100 per barrel today on fresh rumors that Iran will do something in the Strait of Hormuz, meanwhile China thumbed their nose at Secretary of Irrelevance State Hillary Clinton and is investing $20 billion dollars in Iranian oil fields. That goes a long way to stabilizing their economy… just sayin’.
